The House
Not necessarily rare things or valuable things, just ordinary objects that carry a little evidence of the people who used them. Books with worn spines. Shoeboxes full of old photographs. A favorite mug.
Over time, I realized that fascination wasn’t limited to the things I collected. It was showing up everywhere in my work—in the way I designed, the objects I was drawn to, and eventually, the way I approached pottery.
I kept coming back to things that were useful, familiar, and made to live with. Things that became more interesting because someone had chosen them, used them, and kept them.
House Over Yonder grew from that idea.
It’s a place to think about the things we make, the things we keep, and the stories that gather around them.
A place for old stories and new ones.
I’ve always been drawn to old things.
Behind the House
House Over Yonder is the independent practice of designer and educator Tori Hord.
I’ve spent more than a decade working in graphic design, with experience spanning independent client work, a marketing agency, and nearly ten years teaching design. My background also includes undergraduate and graduate study in graphic design.
The House brings those years of experience into a smaller, more personal practice. One where I can work closely with thoughtful, owner-led businesses and give each project the time to be researched, explored, and carefully made.
The work takes different forms. Often, it looks like a brand identity. Sometimes it looks like a handmade mug. Sometimes it is a photograph, a found object, or a reflection on an ordinary moment.
It took me a long time to realize that the thread is the same:
